John Hegley - The Adventures of Monsieur Robinet
03 October 7:45 PM
In this entertainment with songs and drawings, John Hegley presents tales about a Frenchman with some unusual [but clean] habits, which include burying his dog’s kennel and his own luggage pieces.
The stories appear alongside other new works, which include an address to aliens on the subject of transport, a poem about a non-talking parrot and some animal impersonations with the aid of a handkerchief.
The audience is invited to sing along. But not to dance. Much.
Suitable for most people over seven. Read more about this event … or
Gyles Brandreth
20 October 7:30 PM
The One-to-One Show
They say all political careers end in tears. In Gyles Brandreth’s case it’s tears of laughter as the actor, author, One Show reporter, former MP and government whip turns stand-up. This is Brandreth unleashed on the stars he’s known (one-to-one) and the wicked ways of Westminster (no expenses spared). Without hesitation or repetition (and just a touch of deviation), Just a Minute regular Gyles delivers a dazzling evening of wit, wordplay and hilarious name-dropping. Read more about this event … or
Peter Alliss
23 October 8:00 PM
With his father, Percy Alliss, among the finest players of his generation, it was perhaps inevitable that Peter would also make a career in golf. Between 1954 and 1969, he won 21 professional tournaments – including three British PGA championships – and was twice winner of the Vardon Trophy. Peter made his broadcasting debut way back in 1961, as part of the BBC team covering the Open Championship at Birkdale which was won by Arnold Palmer. His retirement from international golf at the – relatively early – age of 38 led to a full-time career ‘on the other side of the ropes’. By 1978 he was the BBC’s chief golf commentator following the death of his co-host and great friend Henry Longhurst.
Now Peter comes to Buxton with an evening of sparkling reminisces of a life in golf, both as a player and a commentator. Read more about this event … or
Start The Car! – Bumble Takes To The Road
29 October 8:00 PM
Come and discover the world according to Bumble, aka David Lloyd, the nation’s favourite cricket commentator.
As a cricketer Bumble played for Lancashire and England and also coached both teams – and he was eccentric enough then! But, since moving behind the microphone as part of the iconic Test Match Special radio team, then joining the Sky Sports cricket commentary team and becoming the face of their Twenty20 coverage, he’s got far worse!
In Start The Car!, Bumble takes us on fun-filled personal journey through his memories of more than forty years in the game, sharing tales of all sizes about the biggest names in world cricket; from Sir Ian Botham to ‘Sir’ Geoffrey Boycott, from Brian Lara to Fred Trueman to Shane Warne to Sachin Tendulkar and all the run wickets and laughs in between.
He is joined in the passenger seat by his friend Peter Hayter, who has reported on cricket all over the world during two decades as the cricket writer for the The Mail On Sunday in which he has also collaborated on best-selling autobiographies with Ian Botham, Phil Tufnell and Marcus Trescothick.
