Galway-born torch singer Mary Coughlan rose to international fame in 1985 with her seminal Irish jazz album Tired and Emotional. Now, with her latest album The House of Ill Repute runs the gamut of emotions with anger, bitterness, betrayal and regret. A companion piece to her autobiography, Mary faces head-on her battles with addiction and the problems in her personal life, including her version of Kirsty MacColl’s song Bad, ‘I’ve been an awful woman all my life / A dreadful daughter and a hopeless wife’. Scott Matthews’ eclectic musical influences have led to a career of musical experimentation, from funk and soul to indie rock. In 2006, Scott released his ground-breaking debut album Passing Stranger, which received much airplay on BBC Radio 2 from the likes of Janice Long, Mark Radcliffe and Bob Harris. His first single, Elusive earned Scott support from the likes of Jo Whiley, Dermot O’Leary, and Zane Lowe (who made it his Single of the Week). The song would go on to win the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. Read more about this event … or
