Show of Hands
21 November 8:00 PM
After a busy summer of UK festival appearances, hot property band Show of Hands – 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards double winners – come to Buxton showing just why they have been showered with accolades.
Singer songwriter Steve Knightley and multi instrumentalist Phil Beer won both the Best Duo title and Best Original Song at the Awards – the latter for the topical title track of their acclaimed new studio album Arrogance Ignorance and Greed, a no-holds-barred Knightley track about bankers and bonuses, MPs and expenses which saw them featured on BBC1’s Breakfast.
Accompanied by striking double bass player/vocalist Miranda Sykes, England’s finest acoustic roots act will be showcasing this album and delving into their rich back-catalogue of original material.
The triple Albert Hall sell-out band who have headlined at festivals from WOMAD to Glastonbury have built a huge following for their inimitable music which crosses from folk roots into blues, rock, country, trad and world. It is played out on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, mandolin to South American cuatro. A whole world in one gig.

Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band
20 December 7:30 PM
Carols & Capers
Following the hugely popular 2008 Christmas tour, Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band will be coming together once more during the festive season with their unique celebratory show, Carols & Capers.
Maddy and the boys put their unique stamp on a range of familiar (and not-so-familiar) festive material, played on Renaissance and modern instruments. Favorites such as The Holly and the Ivy and I Saw Three Ships rub shoulders with secular carols like The Boar’s Head and dance tunes like Old Joe Clark, whilst also exploring some new and exotic directions, mixing ancient, modern and ethnic instrumentation with a refreshingly cavalier attitude and plenty of humour. Loudon Wainwright III
15 May 7:30 PM
American folk singer, songwriter, humorist and actor Loudon Wainwright III is nothing short of an institution. A successful singer for over 40 years (at one time hailed ‘the new Dylan’ – a tag he lampooned in the song Talking New Bob Dylan). In his trademark, self-mocking style (characterised by his novelty hit Dead Skunk), Loudon has carved out a unique niche as a confessional singer and songwriter. He also appeared as Capt Calvin Spalding (the singing surgeon) in the TV series MASH as well as in films such as Big Fish and The Aviator. The father of singers Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Loudon continues to plough his own personal furrow through the music business and remains an inspiration to generations of singers.
