A penniless stranger arrives in a small provincial town and is mistaken for a an important government official. Lead by the town Mayor the guilt-ridden officials treat the bogus inspector like royalty until he is eventually exposed – making his corrupt and self-serving hosts look extremely foolish. Gogol’s brilliant comedy The Government Inspector aims to entertain with its unlikely, exaggerated, and farcical situations, ending with what Gogol perfectly describes as a literal monument to human greed and folly.
