The Mikado is the most frequently performed and most popular of all the G&S operas. Set in the town of Titipu, this hilarious productionpokes delicious fun at politics and politicians and its bountiful score and witty lyrics never fail to amuse. Including all-time favourites such as Tit Willow, Three Little Maids, I’ve Got a List, A Wand’ring Minstrel I, Let the Punishment Fit the Crime and The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring. The 19th International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival
An undoubted highlight of this year’s Festival will be this performance of The Prodigal Son in St John’s Church in Buxton presented by A La Carte. The Prodigal Son was Sullivan’s first oratorio with text taken from the parable of the same name in the Gospel of Luke. It premiered at Worcester Cathedral on September 10 1869 as part of the Three Choirs Festival. Sullivan composed the music in around three week when he was still in his 20s and a rising star of British music. Read more about this event … or

Last year Simon Moss and his Glitter & Twisted Company brought a highly entertaining Ruddy George to Buxton. This year we are delighted to welcome a return visit with The Contrabandista (or The Law of the Ladrones) a two-act comic opera by Arthur Sullivan and F C Burnand.
