Returning by popular demand, Buxton Opera House’s youth theatre project, OnStage, presents a re-worked and extended version of their highly successful Arabian Nights … and Days. The show is a magic carpet ride to a universe of wonder and delight. There will be tales of learned sages and magic potions, fishermen and genies, three apples that bring betrayal and death, and a magnetic mountain containing the secrets of the world.
A murderous madness is consuming the Sultan. Whenever he wants he marries a new wife. The next morning he has her killed. All are powerless before him. The number of his victims mounts. Mothers and fathers live in fear. Will their daughter be next?
Then Scherazade, the daughter of the Sultan’s High Counsellor, demands to be the next wife. All are dumbfounded. Has she lost her senses?
She enters the lion’s den, armed only with her wits, her courage and the germ of an idea. Will the brutal Sultan kill her or can she divert him from his evil intent? Can she save herself? Can she stop the killing?
Using the magic of the spoken word and the simplest of objects – a piece of wood, a scrap of cloth, a bundle of wool – we will create a visual feast, a storytelling odyssey to excite your imagination.
