Midsummer Magic At The Dome
7 November 2005
Buxton Opera House and the Theatre Arts department of the University of Derby were delighted by the success and response to their breathtaking production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream which was performed under the magnificent Dome at the Devonshire Campus. All 1800 tickets for the three evening performances sold out by mid-September, a full 6 weeks before the production, and due to huge public demand an extra matinee performance was performed on Saturday 29 October at 2pm.
Andrew Aughton, Chief executive of the Opera House and producer of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, commented: “this has been a brilliant and rewarding finale to months of planning by me and my colleagues at the theatre, and the creative team at the University’s Art Department. I am overjoyed that the Opera House was able to branch out in this way, working in collaboration with the University and bringing a unique piece of entertainment to almost two-and-a-half thousand people. What better way to welcome the new campus to Buxton.”
Actress Gwen Taylor, who attended the opening night as a University of Derby Court Member, commented that “the performance was magical – an historic first, I had great fun tonight. The cast and crew did so well staging such a complex play in this space.”
Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Coyne, said he was “filled with pride watching the play. It was stunning! It is a wonderful example of partnership, showing what can be achieved here.”
